All training at Somerset is based on what the behavioral sciences call "learning theory". This training does not come from the human perspective, rather it is based on ethological observations on how horses learn.
Foundation Training ("breaking in") and foal handling starts early at Somerset.
Social facilitation, using the help of an older quiet horse, teaches the foals
to stay calm and quiet in all situations. By the time our youngsters are ready
to be started under saddle, they have already been exposed so much
that the event is not an issue. Regosa, a yearling in these pictures,
loves her "uncle Yucon" and is well on her way to becoming a nice young
lady.
Here Alyson, a 3 year old Percheron filly is being started under
saddle. A western saddle is safest at first, only a halter is
necessary.
Horses need lay up and rehabilitation for various medical or behavioral
reasons. Fanny, a 5 yr old Oldenburg mare, is currently being treated
with inhalation therapy for her allergic lung conditions. Horses can
panic when a tight mask is put over their norse and mouth. Fanny has
been gradually introduced, by our experienced staff, in a step by step
process, using desensitizing and counter conditioning, to get her used
to the procedure and make it a pleasurable experience.
